Tomato Soup Recipe and Weird Diet Restrictions

I just tried a new tomato soup recipe that is very yummy and easy. You can see it here.

Unfortunately, I can't make it for myself for the next 4 weeks :-(. *sigh* I've had a rash on my elbows and knees (and a bit on my shoulders/back) for 5 months or so, and I finally was able to see someone about it. Basically, the suggestion is that I do an elimination diet for 4 weeks, eliminating basically every food I enjoy (all the common allergens - dairy, CHOCOLATE *whimper*, sugar - all types except pure maple syrup, peanuts, corn and corn derivatives, eggs, oranges, etc. - just pick one of my favorite foods, and it's probably on the list). Let's just say it's going to be a long 4 weeks. I predict I (accidentally) lose at least 5 pounds.

I just got back from Trader Joe's where I bought some goat's milk, goat cheese, almond butter, and a few other products. I even have to find alternative vitamins, because mine all contain corn startch.

After 4 weeks I slowly add back in foods by category, in the hopes that some light will be shed. We'll see. The challenge is to still get enough calories (still exclusively breastfeeding) and fats in. No butter! I live on butter. Olive oil, here I come. . .

Hans STILL isn't interested in solids? I know mother's milk is awesome, but smooshed peas and mashed bananas are kinda good, right?

Haha. Yeah, still no love for solids. Apparently this isn't terribly unusual. I've met 3 moms (at least) who did EBF, and their babies were not really eating much of any solids until right around a year. And all their babies were very healthy. So, dunno *shrugs*. I'll keep trying, but I'm not really worried at this point. . .

Chocolate???

I repeat, CHOCOLATE??? :-(

Yeah, he'll be ok :). I think I read in some baby book that until the first year, eating solids is more for the novelty of it all, and not really for the nutrition. I guess that's a good thing - babies tend to smear their solids all over the place!

Can you have sunflower seeds? I remember eating as many of those as I could when I was on a restricted diet. Sunflower seed butter is also good... though harder to find unsweetened. You can make your own in the food processor or blender-- I had to add in some extra oil though. Can you have walnuts and pecans and stuff like that? Walnut oil is good. So is coconut oil. Do try to get in as much fat as you can! Can you have rice? I ate a bowl of rice every morning with a little bit of butter (I was allowed a small amount) for breakfast. It was during this time that I discovered how tasty other whole grains like barley, rye, and especially buckwheat are when cooked! Oh I especially love buckwheat, but my mom doesn't like it or how it smells cooking (I think it smells wonderful!) so I don't fix it much : ) Hope you are able to manage, and get rid of the rash without losing very much weight! I'm telling you, watch out-- I lost like 10 pounds in a month and a half, and it took a long time for me to get it back! So eat as much carbohydrates and fat as you're allowed to : )
And hmm, about the chocolate... can you have carob? You can find carob powder and somtimes grain-sweetened carob chips at health food stores. It's not exactly chocolate, but it'll do.

Of course rashes can be due to a number of reasons and are not necessarily due to food allergies.

You might look at this article for some additonal sources of rashes.

My younger son (some years ago) had a rash on his head in the area of his hair. We found out that lavender in the stuff he was using was the cause. After he discontinued using the product the rash went away. Some people are allergic to certain metals found in cheap jewelery. The rashes of course occur where the metal came in contact with the skin.

Detergents could be the cause, though I suppose you use the types which have formulas that are allergen-free. Also fabric softers which contain perfumes are sometimes the culprit.

You can ask a pharmacist if they would have some non-precription products you could try, though it is good if you can determine the cause.

My homeopath asked me approximately 5 zillion questions about new detergents, shampoos, plants, animals, behaviors, etc., as other causes for the rash, but nothing really came up, so that's why we narrowed it down to food. I have tried some over-the-counter preparations (at the advice of my M.D. aunt), but unfortunately, no help.

The good news is that after only a week, my rash looks tons better, so I think we're having some success. Now to just finish out the next three weeks and then start adding back foods. I just no it's sugar :-(.
