Child of God, wife, mother. Wanna-be lay theologian. Geek of all things math. Crafter of many things.
Born in the Midwest, raised in the South, now living in New England. I'm wife to Adrian since September 2007. I'm mother to Hans (June 2008) and Gretchen (October 2010). I'm a child of God, beloved of Him since before the creation of the world. I am blessed.
Isn't it a false dichotomy, though? Can't we raise kids AND raise consciousness? Or, better yet, bring our kids along WHILE raising consciousness, so we'll raise kids who care?
I'm not a mom yet, so maybe I'll feel differently later, but I really respect moms who I see do both well.
Interesting, because I hadn't read it as a false dichotomy, though I can now see why you did. I think for me (and I think you and I differ on this, to at least some extent, and that's okay), it was an affirmation that women have a special high calling raising kids, that is more important than a lot of other things that people would have us believe are more important.
I didn't mean that women can't help to raise social consciousness. I know a mom of 8 kids who probably didn't do a whole lot of social consciousness raising as a young mother, but she's raised her children to be politically active, and now the 3 oldest, who are all high school graduates (2 boys, 1 girl) are highly politically active. And I'm sure she now has more opportunity to directly be active than she did. Sure, bring along kids! My mom would take us to pro-life rallies, we'd go to homeless shelters, etc. The point, I think, is to make sure to see the value in raising up little ones. That alone can be a great gift to society.
I tried to share the comic strip on facebook and it wouldn't let me. It said some FB users have flagged this offensive. Thought you'd like to know! I shared the link to your blog instead. :)
