A Little Taxonomic Exercise

I've observed with amusement the variety of responses we've received from friends and acquaintances, regarding our pregnancy announcement. And so I give you a classification system:

The Presumptive (Type I):
Before we've even taken any pregnancy tests, certain peoples were already asking, "So, are you pregnant yet?"

The Expectant:
When told that we have news, "Susan must be pregnant."

The Incredulous:
"I heard from someone. . . *pauses with questioning/unbelieving look* . . . that. . . you're pregnant?"

The Curious:
"So. . . were you and Adrian hoping to start a family this soon?"

The Presumptive (Type II):
"So I bet you weren't expecting to be pregnant this soon, were you?" *wink*

The Consoling:
"I wanted to let you know that I've never regretted any of my children. . . "

Hehe.

Hehe I fall under the "Expectant" classification. :-) Your mom remarks very casually that you had emailed me, and I immediately knew you were pregnant. :-) Hehe Of course I was thrilled for you. :-)

Have you gotten "Wow, you're announcing it soon..." at all?

Susan said...

Yes, we've gotten that too. It's interesting, because it used to be more usual to wait until 2-3 months along, but seriously MOST of the people I've known recently that have gotten pregnant have announced it right away, like immediately after taking a pregnancy test, pretty much. So we didn't think anything of it. I mean, we're told to rejoice with those who rejoice, so don't we want our family and friends to rejoice with us? Plus, how do you respond to the Presumptive Type I people, if you know you're pregnant ;-)? But yeah, we have had a few people rather surprised that we announced it, but seriously, it's becoming so much more common that I didn't think it would phase anyone. . .

Oh it doesn't bother ME at all. :-) But I actually got that when I told a friend of mine about you... I was surprised at that response. Well I'm rejoicing with you! How are you feeling?

Susan said...

Oh, I know it didn't bother you, Mrs. "Oh, I figured she was pregnant" response ;-). Hehe. I'm kind of up and down. I may feel fine for a few days, then not keep many meals down for a few days :-P. Better than I thought it would be, though :-). Yes, I know I still haven't responded to your forever-ago e-mail :-P. My inbox looks atrocious right now. . .

So under which category would I fall? As I recall my reactions were along the lines of "Wow, not wasting much time, are we?", "You can't even PLAN that fast" and "Ah, good work, Adrian!" *laugh* I knew you wanted kids asap, and the timing amused me. Impressive really - not everyone is fertile on their honeymoon, you know.

Susan said...

Yeah, I really need another category, I think, though I think you may have fit under a form of expectant. You and my brother had similar reactions. His G-talk status for several days was "so efficient." And yeah, we do realize that not everyone can conceive this soon!

I think you need another category...the people who are just plain happy and excited for you!
:-D

(but weren't really *expecting* it!)

Well... I was rather shocked and surprised to hear you'd managed so quickly, so "expectant" doesn't quite cover it. Six months later I would've been "expectant" but a wedding night baby... now that's impressive!

so I'm classified as Presumtive Type I. : )

I just read the comments and am quite amused. ;-)

Yeah, I guess I need a few more categories :-). Both Anna and Anna can be lumped under "miscellaneous." How's that ;-)?

Since both of you are math fanatics, you did the math to figure out that Susan got pregnant on September 24 at 10:30PM!!

I think it is a true gift from God when people have their children early in the marriage-God knew you were both ready to be parents.Unlike us we ended up on the infetilty wait of 6 years.

Eltinwe said...

Well, from what you said, I was sort of hoping I'd at least have the company of your brother in my "miscellaneous" category.

Susan said...

Well, the other Anna falls into miscellaneous, Anna. My brother probably actually is closest to you, I'd say. He wasn't surprised, because he knew it was an option, but he did think we were rather "efficient." so good point!

Tammy, I'm still trying to figure out the date and time you gave??? :-) It is indeed a blessing we're not taking for granted, that we were able to conceive early :-).

Tammy C said...

I just made up a time and date knowing that you were married on the 22nd.Now I am sure you will figure out that the baby willbe born on June 22 at 1:32 PM!!

By the way Happy First Married Thanksgiving.

Susan said...

Okay, that makes more sense. I was sitting here trying to figure out a sequence of numbers or something ;-).

Well, you know what category I fall in. ;-) Although... I don't think I ever technically asked you if you were pregnant yet, but lots of people asked me if you were! Dan Gladden calls me Grandma Garrison now. Hehe.

For all of us that are avid readers we wish you would update more often. We want to hear all about your pregnancy and how your first few months of marriage life are going. You got us addicted to your blog before you were married and just wish there were more updates. :)

ashley @ twentysixcats said...

I second Caroline's request. Though I DID get an email from you - as brief as it was - so I should be happy with that. :-)

Jessica said...

LOL! That's funny. Congrats!! :)

Sorry, everyone! I will update shortly! Glad to know I'm missed :-).
